Nestled deep in a woodland estate of camelthorn and ebony trees bordering Hwange National Park, Camelthorn lodge is a striking bush retreat unlike any other in Hwange. In harmony with its surroundings, the main lodge has been built around a massive camelthorn tree. The expansive dining and living areas which feature a bar and teak lounge deck are decorated in earthy hues and textured fabrics that create an atmosphere of relaxation and sophistication.

The forest villa rooms have a modern feel with large glass windows and sliding doors, giving the impression of being at one with nature. Each villa also has an upstairs covered patio, which is accessed via an outside spiral staircase so that you can look out into the treetops with a pair of binoculars – particularly great for birders. And for something very special at night, the patio can be transformed into a romantic sleep out under a canopy of stars.

To prevent destruction of the pristine woodland by elephant a permanent waterhole has been created less than a kilometre away from the lodge. Take an escorted stroll to a large private underground blind where you can sit and observe interactions within, and between, the elephant herds coming in to drink. Experience some real eco-tourism by spending an afternoon visiting local villages and schools and hear about some of the many community based projects Camelthorn’s parent company is involved in. Interpretive bush walks, bird watching and a full day “pump” run during the dry months of May to November add to the classic game drives and safari activities available.
